Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstraße

High above the Ötztal Alps, Timmelsjoch connects Tyrol in Austria with South Tyrol in Italy, crossing the Alps at more than 2,500 metres. The route stretches for roughly 35 kilometres between Untergurgl and Moos in Passeier, with around 30 hairpin bends and gradients reaching up to 13%.

For drivers and motorcyclists, Timmelsjoch is one of the great Alpine road experiences. The road constantly changes character as it climbs — from green mountain meadows and forests to exposed high-alpine terrain, with dramatic views opening up around every bend. The official road statistics also reflect its popularity, with more than 80,000 motorcycles recorded in 2025.

Cross the summit and the landscape transforms again, with the road descending toward the distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere of the Italian side. It's not simply a mountain pass — it's a journey across two landscapes, two cultures and one unforgettable road.
